Sean Lionel Michael Ray was killed in an automobile accident near Barnesville, Minnesota, on 18 February, which also claimed the life of his beloved partner, Judy Reid. He was 49 years old. Sean was born in Manitou, Manitoba, Canada, in 1963 to Grayce (Cassidy) Ray and Timothy Ray. As a youngster, he moved with the family to various locations in the United States, settling in the Fargo/Moorhead area in 1970. He graduated from Fargo South High School in 1981 and attended North Dakota State University, excelling principally in his passion, soccer. He was a gregarious and popular athlete, especially enjoying associating with the international students who then composed the soccer program. Soccer, both playing and coaching, continued to be an important part of his life.
