James Joseph Maher

James Joseph Maher (Jimmy), age 37, formerly of Bowman and Bismarck died unexpectedly at his home in Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday April 23, 2013. He attended elementary school in Bowman, ND. As a child you could find him at the Bowman Golf Course playing many rounds of golf. James graduated from St. Mary's Central High School in Bismarck, ND where he excelled in wrestling, football, and golf. He was a starter on the football team, was recognized for his outstanding achievement as most valuable in wrestling, and made the All-Conference team in golf. James' love of golf earned him a scholarship to play at Eastern Michigan University where he made the All-Mid Atlantic Conference team. After graduating with a degree in Business Administration, he followed his dream to play golf and moved to Arizona where he worked as an Assistant Pro at TPC Scottsdale. He spent the last ten years working in finance, where he enjoyed the friendship of his coworkers. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He enjoyed skiing and swimming with his nieces and nephew at the lake, he was known for his sense of humor, stories and infectious laugh. James' constant companion was his faithful dog Roxy. He was preceded in death by his Grandfather John Maher and Grandfather and Grandmother Alvin and Marjorie Abrahamson. He is survived by his mother Linda Maher of Detroit Lakes, MN, and his Father Tim Maher of Dickinson, ND; his step-mother Pamela Maher of Fargo, ND; his Grandmother Betty Maher in Bismarck, ND; his brother Jared (Elizabeth) and nieces Annabelle and Emmalise and nephew John; Sister Jana Maher; Sister Bailey Maher; numerous Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and Friends in North Dakota and Arizona.

The funeral mass will be held Friday, May 3rd at 12:30 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan, ND. There will be a family service on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used to establish the James Maher Golf Scholarship fund. Donations can be sent to Kirkwood Bank and Trust, Bismarck North Dakota.

Philip Hetland, 88, of Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, driving his car near his home of one year, Farmstead Estates. The hard snow was a blessing in stopping the car without incident.

Phil was born June 14, 1924, near Hetland, SD (Kingsbury County), to Carl and Gudrid (Vigesaa) Hetland, moving to a farm near Cooperstown, ND, with his family at age 3. He attended country school, then Cooperstown High School, graduating in 1943. He joined the U. S. Navy and was in the field of electronics, stationed at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC, when WWII ended. He then attended Concordia College, graduating in 1949. On October 5, 1951, he married Lorraine Brodshaug at Horace, ND. They lived in Underwood, ND, for four years where Phil taught science, math and music and was principal. He directed a church choir there. They moved to Bottineau, ND, in 1955 where Phil had all the high school choirs and band. Great school talent resulted in award-winning groups. In 1956, Phil was offered the Engineering Dept. one-year opening at the then School of Forestry, teaching all the classes. He was coach of the baseball team and was named coach of the year. That year he also directed the Bottineau Community Choir. In 1957, Phil was offered a position in the Physics Dept. at then NDAC. He retired as Professor in 1986. While at NDSU, he was involved in many of the Christian youth groups on campus. He also earned a master's degree in his first years there.

Shirley Summerville, loved and adored wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away April 23, 2013 after a valiant and heroic two year battle with brain cancer. She was 65 years old.

Shirley was born on June 30, 1947 in Moorhead, MN to Vernon and Colletta Christiansen. She grew up and attended school in Rothsay and Barnesville, MN graduating from Barnesville High School in 1965. Following high school Shirley received her secretarial accreditation from Alexandria Vocational Technical College in Alexandria, MN in 1966 and began her professional career in the Twin Cities, which included working at Miller Hospital for three years.

Ernest "Ernie" B. Fadness, age 87, a life long resident of Lisbon, ND died at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon on Thursday, April 25, 2013.

Ernest Burnell Fadness was born on January 18, 1926 in rural Lisbon, North Dakota to Edward and Bertha (Moen) Fadness. Ernie attended school in Aliceton Township in Ransom County, ND and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1944. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Ernie enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII from 1944 til 1946. Ernie attended the North Dakota State School of Science for one year. Ernie married Audrey Hoff on October 14, 1949 and they made their home in Lisbon. Ernie was enlisted in the Army Reserve and called up for active duty again during the Korean War from 1950 through 1951.

Former North Dakota Governor, William L. "Bill" Guy, 93, of Fargo, ND, died of Alzheimer disease, on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Eventide at Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo, ND. Bill was elected to four terms as Governor and served from 1961 to 1973.

William Lewis Guy was born September 30, 1919, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, son of William L. and Mable (Leet) Guy.

Jeanette was born on August 21, 1935, to John and Mabel Hahn at St. John's Hospital in Fargo. She was raised on the family farmstead at Alice, ND. Jeanette was the youngest of eleven children.

Roger White, 70, Stirum, ND died April 25 at Sanford Medical Center surrounded by family. Roger was born July 31, 1942 in Britton, SD to Paul and Violet (Hill) White. He attended the Stirum School and went on to college in Wahpeton. In 1962, he married Connie Robins and together they had two children: Tracey and Paul. Roger worked at Melroe Manufacturing (Bobcat) until 1974 and then he took on full-time farming. He retired from farming in 2006. Roger was a Gwinner Volunteer Fireman, a member of North Sargent School Board, G.A. Men's Group, Stirum Community Club, Sargent County Water Board, Red River Basin Commission and Vivian Township Board. He became a member of the Mason's and Shiners' in 1998. Roger enjoyed his years of raising grain and row crops, pedal tractor pulls, go cart racing, car club and playing pool with friends. He looked forward to the summer when he could drive his '57 Ford Fairlane Convertible in area parades. He was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed fishing and was always proud to watch his grandchildren in school events. Roger is survived by his wife, Connie; two children Tracey (Jerry) Waswick and Paul (Jennifer) White all of Gwinner, ND. Roger adored his five grandchildren; Shane and Dustin White, Emily, Sarahbeth and Ben Waswick. He is also survived by one sister; Carolyn Hopewell, Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service for Roger will be Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 10:30 am at the Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, Gwinner. Visitation will be Monday, April 29, 2013 from 5:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service following at 7:00 pm held at Armstrong Funeral Home in Lisbon. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Lisbon at a l

Henry N. Ness, 95, Fargo passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.

Henry was born February 21, 1918 near Edmore, ND to Nils and Anna (Johanessen) Ness. He graduated from Starkweather High School. He went on to attend college at North Dakota Agricultural College, graduating in 1941 with a degree in Agriculture. He taught for a year in Cavalier, ND before WWII intervened. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Army Air Force where he spent three years in the Air Transport Command.
