Ila was born on September 4, 1920 in Ceylon, MN to William and Ida (Schoeppach) Hickman. Ila graduated in 1938 from Colgate High School in Colgate, North Dakota and she went on to earn her beautician certification in Fargo, North Dakota. On July 22, 1939, Ila married James (Jim) Young in Steele County. They raised five children: Janet, James Jr., Jacquelyn (Jackie), Joel, and Jayson. Jim and Ila made their home on a farm outside of Hope for several years, where Jim farmed and Ila worked at the Johnson's Store, until moving to Fargo. After moving with her husband and children to Fargo, she began her twenty plus year career with Sears and Roebuck. Ila was very dedicated to her family and managed to find time in her busy schedule to be there for all music, sporting, and church events. She was an active member of First Methodist Church in Fargo and was a member of the church choir for several years.
