Don was born in Fargo, N.D. on July 19, 1930 to Martha Ingelina Erickson and Richard Donald Lamb, and was raised in Dilworth, Minn. After high school he enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy and served from 1948-1949. He then attended NDSU until he started medical school at UND and completed his internship at the University of Utah. After completing his general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and finished his training in Plastic Surgery in 1963. He moved back and started his solo practice in Fargo, N.D. At that time he was the only plastic surgeon in the country between Minneapolis and Seattle. His surgical mentors were skeptical he could survive in rural America, but he developed a successful practice and ultimately retired in 1995 after helping many children with cleft lips and palates as well as hundreds of trauma victims. He served on the Fargo School Board from 1974-1977.
